Passwords

  • Create a master passphrase of at-least five random words to unlock the password manager. Write it down and put it someplace safe.
  • Use a password manager. 1Password and Keepass are good choices. Password managers prevent reuse and keep your passwords synchronized across devices.
  • Use two-factor authentication. Prefer google authenticator, or a yubikey to SMS.

Browsing

  • Use a modern, up-to-date, browser.
  • Use privacy protecting browser extensions like HTTPS Everywhere, privacy badger, and uBlock.
  • Most browser exploits have come from Java, Flash, and Acrobat, so disable them when possible.
  • A VPN provides privacy from your internet service provider. Tor provides anonymity. Don’t confuse anonymity with privacy.
